A permanent Pokémon store is coming to London by 2029, the first of several outside Asia

Pokémon fans outside Asia will soon have a permanent store to visit. The Pokémon Company says it will open several permanent stores outside Asia, starting with London, which is set to open by 2029.¹

What was announced

The announcement on The Pokémon Company’s official website calls London the first of several permanent stores, but names no other cities or countries.² The company says it will share details of other locations later.³

Gaku Susai, chief product and experience officer at The Pokémon Company International, put it this way: “This new London store will give visitors the chance to step into the world of Pokémon, whether they’re discovering the brand for the first time or have been Trainers for years.”⁴ Like the pop-ups before it, the store will sell exclusive merchandise.⁵

London has had a taste already

Pokémon has run pop-up shops in London, including one at the Natural History Museum this year and others during the Pokémon European International Championships.⁶ The difference now is permanence.

The New York precedent

This is not Pokémon’s first permanent store outside Asia. Pokémon Center New York opened in 2001, and four years later it became Nintendo’s flagship store.⁷ That store, now Nintendo New York, still sells Pokémon merchandise, and its door handles are still shaped like Poké Balls.⁸

Why it matters

The Pokémon Centers in Asia draw tourists, fans and scalpers from around the world, because they sell exclusive merchandise and have displays found nowhere else.⁹ A permanent store in London brings that model to Europe on a fixed site, rather than as a temporary pop-up.¹⁶

What we don’t know

Where in London it will be, how big it will be, and which cities come next. None of that has been announced.²³
