BioWare closed a week ago: what we know about the cancelled Mass Effect

BioWare is closed and its next Mass Effect is cancelled. What the studio said, what the leaked trailer and insider claims show, and what is still unclear.

BioWare is gone. The studio said on social media that it is closing and that early development on the next Mass Effect is ending, and IGN dates the shutdown to 21 October 2026.12 In the week since, an internal trailer has leaked, a former insider has described the game, Battlefield 6 has quietly dropped its Mass Effect items, and a fan petition has passed 180,000 signatures.3456

What BioWare and EA said

BioWare’s own words were short: “Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.”1 Its statement named the games it is known for, from Baldur’s Gate and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic to Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Anthem.7

The closure is part of a wider cut. Bloomberg reported that EA plans to cut roughly 400 jobs, about 3 percent of its workforce, and a letter to staff seen by Bloomberg said: “Across our portfolio, we’re making deliberate choices to align talent and investments where we see the greatest opportunities for players and long-term growth”.89 Eurogamer says about 50 developers were working on the new Mass Effect, and that the cuts also reached Respawn, Maxis, Full Circle and EA Motive.10

It came months after EA was bought for $55 billion by Silver Lake, Affinity Partners and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.11 BioWare’s recent record was already weak: Dragon Age: The Veilguard missed EA’s internal sales expectations, which led to an earlier round of layoffs.12

What the leaked trailer shows

The game was called Mass Effect Universe. An internal trailer made for EA leadership, not the public, appeared online after the closure, opening with the line: “The following is in-engine footage from our small team. It uses our pre-production assets.”3 Some suspected it was AI-generated. IGN verified it and Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier corroborated it.13

It shows a new protagonist with their own ship and crew, including a Krogan, and ends with an appearance by Liara from the original trilogy.14

What an insider claims

YouTuber Dantics, who says he sat on BioWare’s Mass Effect player council, has described the game in more detail. These are his claims, not EA’s. He says it was set more than 600 years after the trilogy, in a galactic Cold War between three factions, and that players would have been an N7 agent in handcrafted linear missions “with Hitman-style freedom in how you complete them.”415 IGN has backed up some of his comments, citing an anonymous development source.16

The Battlefield 6 items had arrived in the menus with Season Five, and fans expected them to mark N7 Day on 7 November.518 The petition does not ask EA to reopen BioWare. It asks EA to keep making Mass Effect or to license it: “Alternatively, EA could consider licensing the Mass Effect intellectual property to another studio that shares the passion and vision to keep it alive and allow it to flourish anew.”19

Mass Effect is not gone everywhere. Amazon Prime Video told IGN its Mass Effect TV series is still in the works.20

What we don’t know

How far along the game was is disputed. BioWare called it early development; Dantics says the team “were a lot further in development than their statement suggested.”121 Nobody has said what EA will do with the Mass Effect name, or whether it will answer the petition. N7 Day on 7 November is the next date to watch.18
