GameStop is charging more for a used PS5 Pro than a new one: what we know
GameStop lists pre-owned PS5 Pro consoles at $1399.99, above the $899.99 price of a new one. What changed, how we know, and what is unexplained.
GameStop is now asking more for a used PlayStation 5 Pro than a new one costs. VGC reports a 55% markup on pre-owned units, and the retailer’s own listings bear it out.12
What changed
A pre-owned standard PS5 Pro is listed on GameStop’s website at $1399.99. A new one is $899.99.2 Push Square, which reported the change a day earlier, puts the new price at $900 and the used price at up to $1,399.99.34
The top figure is $1,499.99, but the two outlets describe it differently. VGC says it applies to special edition consoles.5 Push Square says it applies to a unit with a disc drive attached.4 Until the listings settle, treat that as unresolved.
How we know
The first sign was a document, not a price tag. VGC says an anonymous Reddit user posted what they claimed was an internal e-mail, which gave no reason for the increase but said: “the pre-owned consoles will have a higher price than the new console [and] this is intentional”.6 Push Square says the correspondence named 16 October as the start date, yet the website had already changed by 6 October.7
That order matters. An unverified e-mail on its own would be a rumour. The public listings are what make this a report about prices anyone can check.2
| What is reported | Source | How firm |
|---|---|---|
| Used PS5 Pro listed at $1399.99, new at $899.99 | VGC, from GameStop’s listings2 | Checkable on the retailer’s site |
| The increase is deliberate | The e-mail, as quoted by VGC6 | A leaked document, not a statement |
| Start date of 16 October | The e-mail, per Push Square7 | Overtaken by the listings |
| No new PS5 Pro stock online at GameStop | VGC8 | True when VGC looked |
| The reason for the increase | Nobody9 | Not given |
Context
Neither outlet has an explanation from GameStop. VGC suggests the retailer is preparing for demand around Grand Theft Auto 6, which it dates to 19 November, and that is the outlet’s reading.9 Push Square points to light supply, to a purchase lottery in Japan restricted to people with 60 hours of PS5 playtime, and to interest in consoles on a particular firmware.10
There is older evidence that stock was expected to be tight. VGC recalls a retail buyer telling The Game Business in the summer: “Demand will likely outstrip supply during the year end period”.11 It also recalls Xbox’s Matthew Ball in June: “I can tell you definitively demand for our console exceeds the supply”.12
What we don’t know
Why GameStop did it. Whether the prices will hold once new stock returns. Whether anyone is paying them. And whether other retailers will follow, which is the question that would turn one chain’s pricing into a trend.
Why it matters
A used console priced above a new one only makes sense when the new one cannot be bought. GameStop’s own site shows exactly that situation: used stock available, new stock absent.8 For anyone planning to buy a console for a big autumn release, the practical point is to check availability of new units before paying a premium for a used one.
